As California transitions through its wildfire seasons, homeowners now have access to a new three-part home protection kit from Safe Soss. This innovative solution aims to equip residents with straightforward tools to better safeguard their properties against the ongoing threat of wildfires.

Wildfires present a year-round danger, primarily through the invasion of glowing embers that can travel vast distances. These embers are capable of infiltrating homes through unsealed cracks and vents, igniting combustible materials from the inside. According to Nicholai Allen, Managing Partner at Safe Soss and a seasoned wildland firefighter, the kit is specifically designed for rapid, do-it-yourself home preparation. “The idea is everyone should have them in the garage and at the ready,” he said. The kit includes a cut-to-size ember-proof carbon filter, specialized tape for sealing gaps, and a unique fire prevention spray that attaches directly to a garden hose.

The ember-proof carbon filter is made from a spongy polymer mesh infused with fire retardant. It can be customized to fit various vent sizes, providing essential protection against smoke and embers. Allen emphasized the novelty of this product, stating, “This has simply never existed as an option before.”

For gaps around doors and windows, the kit provides a heat-resistant, ember-proof tape featuring a clean-peel adhesive. This tape adheres to exterior surfaces even in high heat, and can be easily removed afterward without damaging paint or leaving residue. “The tape is made of fiberglass,” Allen explained, “and brings professional-grade ember gap sealing to homeowners.”

Easy Application and Environmental Safety

The final component is a “twice over” fire prevention spray that mixes with water through a standard garden hose. This user-friendly system allows homeowners to quickly coat their properties, including fences and vegetable patches, without needing specialized equipment. The phosphate-based formula is designed to be safe for humans, animals, and plants, while also acting as a fertilizer to aid regrowth after a fire.

“There is nothing like this on the market,” Allen noted, highlighting that the spray was engineered from scratch and has a five-year shelf life. The tape boasts a storage life of ten years, making both products practical for immediate use ahead of fire weather warnings.

The Safe Soss products are available through Lowe’s, with prices set at approximately $40 for the vent filters, $30 for the sealing tape, and just under $150 for the fire prevention spray, which covers around 400 square feet (37.2 sq m). These prices represent a significant investment in home safety, particularly as wildfire risks continue to rise.
