Montgomery County Boosts DUI Enforcement Ahead of Thanksgiving
With Thanksgiving approaching, officials in Montgomery County are intensifying efforts to combat impaired driving. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), in collaboration with the County’s Police and Alcohol Beverage Services, is launching a campaign to address expected increases in drunk driving, especially on the night before Thanksgiving, a time known for heightened alcohol consumption.
MCDOT Director Chris Conklin emphasized the importance of planning safe transportation options for those celebrating the holiday. “We expect to see a record number of drivers on the road this year,” Conklin stated, highlighting the risks associated with increased traffic and nighttime driving. He encouraged individuals to utilize the zero-fare Ride On buses as a responsible alternative to driving after drinking.
Holiday Task Force and Increased Patrols
The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is also taking proactive measures. A “Holiday Task Force” has been established to monitor impaired drivers, implementing sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols from November 19, 2023, through January 10, 2026. MCPD Chief Marc Yamada underscored the initiative’s goal, stating, “Our Holiday Task Force will be out in full force to identify and stop impaired drivers, because these collisions are entirely preventable.”
Last year, this enforcement strategy resulted in the arrest of 238 drivers and the issuance of 2,773 citations. The MCPD’s commitment to safety during the holiday season aims to reduce incidents of impaired driving.
Collaborative Efforts for Community Safety
In addition to law enforcement measures, the Montgomery County Department of Alcohol Beverage Services is advocating for responsible alcohol service. Director Kathie Durbin noted that licensed establishments are trained to prevent overserving and to recognize signs of intoxication among patrons. This collaborative approach between regulatory authorities and local businesses strives to create a safe environment during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Residents looking for safe transportation options can visit the County’s Vision Zero website for resources on local rideshare programs. For further information on Montgomery County’s traffic safety initiatives, individuals are encouraged to check the official MCDOT website and follow updates on their social media platforms, including Bluesky, Facebook, and Instagram.
As Thanksgiving festivities begin, Montgomery County officials urge everyone to prioritize safety and make responsible travel plans.
