Major Traffic Overhaul Begins December 1 on San Francisco’s 19th Avenue
UPDATE: San Francisco commuters, brace yourselves! Starting December 1, 2023, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will initiate a significant overhaul of the heavily trafficked 19th Avenue, a vital North-South artery for the city. This construction is poised to create major traffic disruptions, impacting daily commutes for thousands.
According to a recent announcement from Caltrans Bay Area-District 4, the first phase of the project will begin at Sloat Blvd. and progress north toward Lincoln Way. The work will include lane and parking strip repaving primarily conducted during off-peak hours, but commuters should still expect delays as the project unfolds.
This extensive initiative spans 18.8 lane miles, leading to intermittent lane reductions that could transform your routine rush hour into a slow-motion ordeal filled with stop-and-go traffic. With expected disruptions particularly pronounced during peak travel times of 6–10 AM and 3–7 PM, drivers are urged to remain vigilant and plan alternate routes.
In addition to lane reductions, Caltrans has indicated there will be meticulous night work at crucial intersections, including Park Presidio and California. Commuters who rely on public transit should also prepare for temporary relocations of bus stops, which are essential for navigating the already complex transit landscape of San Francisco.
While Caltrans is committed to keeping at least one lane open in each direction throughout the construction, the anticipated slowdowns and detours are likely to test the patience of daily travelers. Authorities emphasize the importance of planning ahead and adjusting schedules to minimize inconvenience during this crucial overhaul.
As the work begins, officials are reminding residents that these improvements are part of a larger effort to rehabilitate major thoroughfares across the city, ultimately enhancing the infrastructure for the future. However, the immediate impact will be felt by anyone traveling through this busy corridor.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story, as Caltrans works to minimize disruptions and enhance traffic flow during this extensive project. Commuters are encouraged to keep informed and share this news to help others navigate the changes ahead.
