Jalen Williams’ Return Fuels Thunder to 11th Straight Win
UPDATE: Jalen Williams made an electrifying return from wrist surgery, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a thrilling 123-119 victory over the Phoenix Suns on November 24, 2023. This win marks the Thunder’s 11th consecutive victory, propelling them to the knockout round of the NBA Cup and solidifying their stunning 19-1 record.
Williams, who had been sidelined for the first 19 games of the season, contributed 11 points and 8 assists in just 29 minutes of play. His performance was pivotal, as the Thunder became just the fifth team in NBA history to achieve such a strong start. The All-Star guard/forward underwent surgery in July to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist, followed by a procedure to remove an irritating screw.
“The goal for tonight was to get in a rhythm, but it’s an adjustment,” Williams stated after the game. “Trying to adjust to the physicality now was a little different. A lot of it was just rhythm — trying not to do too much.” Williams is now focused on regaining his offensive flow after missing significant time.
Despite Williams’ absence, the Thunder have thrived, showcasing their depth and talent. Last season, Williams emerged as one of the league’s standout players, averaging 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. However, his missed games mean he is ineligible for postseason honors and the potential $287 million super maximum contract kicker linked to his contract extension.
Star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also made headlines, scoring a game-high 37 points, including an impressive 15 points in the final seven minutes. His performance matches the legendary Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak in NBA history, with at least 20 points in 92 consecutive games.
As the Thunder continue their remarkable run, all eyes will be on how Williams integrates back into the team and enhances their quest for dominance this season. The Thunder’s next challenge will be pivotal as they aim to maintain their momentum in the highly competitive league.
Stay tuned for more updates on Williams and the Oklahoma City Thunder as they pursue further success in the upcoming matches!
