Parkland High School’s boys basketball team is gearing up for the upcoming season, facing challenges but remaining optimistic about a strong performance. The team, led by third-year coach Eddie Ohlson, is dealing with the absence of star player TJ Lawrence, who is recovering from a slight fracture of his fibula sustained during the District 11 6A football final on November 14. Lawrence is expected to miss approximately six to eight weeks, which sidelines him until mid-January.

Lawrence, a vital contributor last season with an average of 7.4 points per game, played a crucial role in the team’s success, including winning the District 11 championship and advancing in the state playoffs. His leadership, defensive skills, and rebounding were invaluable to a squad that finished last season with a record of 19-10 and a 12-4 mark in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC).

Despite the loss of Lawrence, Ohlson expressed confidence in the depth of his roster. “It’s tough to lose someone of his caliber,” Ohlson remarked. “But we see this as an opportunity for other players to step up.” One player expected to fill the void is senior Javian Porter, who has shown promise during the offseason. Porter emphasized the need for teamwork and communication as the team adjusts to Lawrence’s absence.

The transition for the football players rejoining the basketball team has been smooth. Porter noted that they are quickly adapting back to the sport. “They know how to play basketball. It’s just a little transition for them,” he said. With a roster filled with experienced seniors, the team is eager to continue building on their past successes.

Junior quarterback Finn Coen is also anticipated to contribute significantly to the basketball team’s efforts this season. Freshman Marcus Temchattin, standing at 6-foot-3, is another player who may see substantial playing time. Ohlson highlighted the team’s extensive summer training, noting they played over 30 games, which has helped solidify their skills and teamwork.

To prepare for the postseason, Parkland has scheduled a demanding nonleague lineup, including matchups against Berks Catholic, Penncrest, Central York, Archbishop Carroll, St. Joe’s Prep, and Imhotep. Ohlson believes these challenges will enhance the team’s competitiveness as they aim for success in the EPC and beyond.

The Trojans will open their season on December 4 against Allen High School, with high hopes for building momentum as they navigate through their schedule. Last season, Parkland averaged 57.2 points per game while allowing 44.7 points, showcasing their strong defensive capabilities.

Parkland’s basketball program boasts a rich history, with a winning percentage of 62.5% over 77 seasons, and has secured nine league and 13 district championships. The program’s all-time leading scorer, Nick Coval, continues to shine at Davidson, averaging 9.2 points per game in his first season playing after redshirting.

As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on the Trojans as they aim to overcome early setbacks and strive for another successful campaign in the EPC.
