In a thrilling overtime matchup, the Denver Broncos defeated the Washington Commanders 27-26 on December 3, 2023, thanks to a pivotal play by defensive end Nik Bonitto. The victory was secured when Bonitto intercepted a two-point conversion attempt from quarterback Marcus Mariota, solidifying the Broncos’ ninth consecutive win.

The game, held at FedExField in Landover, Md., featured a dramatic finish. The Commanders had tied the score in the final seconds of regulation, responding to a touchdown by the Broncos to open overtime. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin caught a crucial 3-yard pass from Mariota on fourth-and-3, setting the stage for the tense two-point conversion attempt.

As the Commanders aligned for their conversion play, Broncos coach Sean Payton called a timeout. During the break, defensive coordinator Vance Joseph opted to modify the defensive strategy, allowing Bonitto to exploit a gap in the Commanders’ offensive line. “We called it a Kodak situation… regroup, collect your thoughts,” Payton explained. The adjustment proved vital, as Bonitto was left unblocked and quickly pressured Mariota.

The Broncos’ defense was tightly packed before the snap, with all 11 defenders within four yards of the line of scrimmage. Bonitto, positioned wide to the defensive right, leaped to deflect Mariota’s pass just as it was released, preserving the win for Denver. “I knew he was buying time,” Bonitto said. “The timeout kind of helped calm us down.”

Earlier in the game, the Broncos believed they had clinched victory when safety Brandon Jones intercepted a deflected pass on a crucial fourth-and-6 play. However, a pass interference penalty on safety Talanoa Hufanga nullified the interception. Payton, believing the game was over, had even removed his communication headset for the first time in years.

This victory marks the Broncos’ longest winning streak since winning 11 games in a row at the end of the 2012 regular season. Notably, six of this season’s games have been decided on the final play, with the Broncos holding a 4-2 record in those situations.

With their momentum building, the Broncos are positioning themselves as strong contenders as the season progresses, showcasing resilience and strategic prowess under pressure.
