Yellowjackets Claim Third Place at Superior Showdown with 5-2 Victory
UPDATE: The Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets surged to victory, defeating St. Scholastica 5-2 in the third-place game at the Superior Showdown on November 29, 2023. This decisive win at Wessman Arena comes after a tough loss against Dubuque, making their victory all the more critical.
The Yellowjackets initially led 2-0 in the first period, but St. Scholastica rallied to tie the game before Carson Riddle struck back with a power-play goal, putting UWS ahead again with just 4:31 left in the second period. The Yellowjackets continued to dominate with Daniel Roszival scoring shorthanded and Chris Ishmael adding another with the man advantage in the third period.
Goalie Kobe Grant was a standout, making 27 saves to secure the victory for UWS. The Yellowjackets were eager for redemption after a disappointing performance against Dubuque the previous day, where they managed only one goal from 31 shots in a 4-1 defeat.
As UWS improves to 4-3-1, they are set to shift their focus to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, beginning with a home game against Wisconsin-River Falls next Friday.
In women’s hockey, the UWS squad faced a tough weekend, concluding a nonconference series against St. Norbert with a 1-0 overtime loss. Despite an impressive performance by goalie Jayda Moyer, who stopped 38 shots, the UWS women fell short after a goal from Tristan Wicklund at the 1:42 mark of overtime. Earlier, a hat trick from Grace Wittkopf led the Green Knights to a 6-3 win on Saturday.
Looking ahead, the women’s team will attempt to turn their fortunes around with a home game against Wisconsin-Eau Claire on December 6, 2023.
In men’s basketball, the Yellowjackets led by 18 points but fell to Loras 68-65 in a nonconference clash at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. UWS started strong, leading 36-29 at halftime and extending their advantage to 44-31 early in the second half. However, Loras fought back with a decisive 11-0 run, taking the lead and holding on for the win.
Star player Caiden Lecce led UWS with 21 points, but the team struggled with 24 turnovers. The Yellowjackets will look to break their losing streak when they travel to face Wisconsin-Stout on Wednesday.
Stay tuned for ongoing coverage of UWS athletics as they navigate a pivotal week ahead!
