New Ownership Energizes Fargo’s Chick-fil-A with Fresh Vision

Fargo has welcomed a new face in the fast-food scene as Sung Kim officially took ownership of the Chick-fil-A at the West Acres location on November 1, 2023. Kim, who has been part of the Chick-fil-A community since 2019, brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to his new role. His transition from the Washington D.C. area marks a significant step in his career and a promising development for the local dining landscape.

Kim relocated to the Fargo-Moorhead area in October and expressed his appreciation for the community. “When I stepped into my apartment, there were eight people waiting at my doorstep to help me move in,” he recalled, highlighting the warmth and hospitality he has encountered since arriving. His positive outlook reflects a commitment to not only running a successful restaurant, but also to being an active member of the community.

Leadership Driven by Experience and Service

At just 29 years old, Kim has cultivated a diverse background that shapes his leadership approach. His journey began in South Korea and included time spent in Cambodia before he immigrated to the United States at the age of 18. A business management graduate from Taylor University in Indiana, Kim has traveled to roughly 50 countries and lived in Switzerland, experiences that have broadened his perspective.

Before joining Chick-fil-A, Kim served as a combat medic in the U.S. Army and continues to serve as a reserve commissioned officer in the Army Chaplain Corps. His military background instills a sense of discipline and dedication to service that he brings to his role. “We call it owner/operator because they want us to be in the restaurant,” Kim explained. He emphasizes hands-on management, spending over 80 hours a week at the restaurant, actively engaging with employees and customers alike.

Kim’s commitment to his team is evident as he oversees a workforce of more than 100 employees. He aims to foster a positive work environment while ensuring high-quality service for patrons. “If my guests are waiting 20 minutes for food, it’s not very important that I go and make other things,” he noted, indicating his focus on operational efficiency before exploring further growth opportunities.

Community Engagement and Future Goals

Kim’s vision for the West Acres location extends beyond daily operations. He plans to continue Chick-fil-A’s tradition of food donations to local homeless shelters and is exploring initiatives to support veterans. One of his major goals is to establish an internship program for high school students, creating opportunities for local college students to gain valuable work experience.

His leadership philosophy centers on mentorship and service, qualities he attributes to his upbringing. Kim believes that young people need encouragement to reach their full potential, and he sees himself as a “cheerleader” for the next generation. He previously served as the director of worship at Nations Church in the D.C. area, where he mentored young adults and led community services.

In his interactions with staff and customers, Kim often quotes Chick-fil-A’s corporate purpose: “Glorify God by being a faithful steward of what’s entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.” He embodies this principle through small gestures, such as offering drinks to delivery drivers, reinforcing the importance of every individual’s contribution.

While excitement builds around a new Chick-fil-A location slated for 2301 55th Street South, Kim clarified that he will not be the operator of that franchise. He views the expansion positively, anticipating that it will create additional job opportunities and further enrich the community. “For me, having two of those places, even though it will take away my sales, I know for me, that’s a win,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to the growth and success of Fargo.

As Kim steps into this new chapter as the owner/operator of Chick-fil-A, he is poised to make a significant impact not only on the restaurant but also on the broader Fargo community. With a focus on service, mentorship, and operational excellence, he aims to create a welcoming atmosphere where both employees and customers feel valued.
