Volcano Art Center Launches 26th Annual Wreath Exhibition
The Volcano Art Center (VAC) has officially opened its 26th Annual Wreath Exhibition, a highly anticipated event that celebrates the creativity of local artists. This year’s exhibition revolves around the theme “Lei for the Season: A Celebration of Garlands and Lei-making Traditions,” encouraging participants to explore the cultural significance of lei in Hawaii.
The exhibition features an array of locally crafted wreaths, ornaments, and seasonal decorations, showcasing diverse materials and artistic techniques. Artists have been inspired to incorporate traditional lei-making methods, such as braiding and twisting, into their wreath designs. Others draw from the vibrant colors and fragrances of native plants and flowers, creating unique pieces that reflect Hawaii’s rich botanical heritage.
Community Engagement through Cultural Demonstrations
In addition to the exhibition, VAC is hosting a series of cultural demonstrations throughout the month. Every Friday from 11:00 to 13:00, cultural practitioners will present lei-, wreath-, and ornament-making demonstrations on the front porch of the VAC Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. These events are free and open to the public, fostering community engagement and appreciation for traditional practices.
The act of sharing lei has deep roots in Hawaiian culture, symbolizing friendship, celebration, and connection. This year’s exhibition aims to honor these traditions while also acknowledging the evolution of lei-making into a commercial art form, particularly with the rise of tourism.
Exhibition Details and Accessibility
Handmade wreaths from local artists are on display at both VAC locations: the VAC Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. For those unable to visit in person, the exhibition can also be experienced online at www.volcanoartcenter.org, providing multiple avenues for individuals to engage with this vibrant display of creativity.
For further details about the exhibition or upcoming events, interested individuals can visit the VAC website or contact the gallery directly at (808) 967-7565. This year’s exhibition not only showcases artistic talent but also serves as a platform to celebrate and preserve the cultural heritage of Hawaii through the art of lei-making.
