UPDATE: A devastating multi-vehicle collision on Highway 87 in San Jose has left at least two people dead, including an adult and a child. The accident unfolded just after 10:50 a.m. yesterday, with authorities confirming the involvement of multiple vehicles, including two Teslas and a Lexus. Tragically, a fourth vehicle fled the scene.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the fatalities and reported that at least two additional individuals were transported to the hospital, though their conditions remain undisclosed. This horrific incident occurred north of Curtner Avenue, resulting in significant traffic disruptions, with northbound lanes blocked for several hours. The highway finally reopened around 3:45 p.m., but backups extended to Capitol Expressway.

In a statement, San Jose Fire Department Battalion Chief Bennett Yendery described the scene as chaotic, stating, “multiple vehicles involved with fire” complicated the response. Firefighters acted swiftly to contain the flames, successfully establishing a safe working area despite the presence of lithium batteries in the electric vehicles.

CHP Officer Ross Lee highlighted the investigation’s complexity, noting, “We respond to crashes all the time… vehicles have many different working components.” The determination of the cause of the fire is currently a priority for investigators. Lee assured that thorough examinations of the burnt vehicles would be conducted to uncover the details surrounding this tragic crash.

As details continue to emerge, the community mourns the loss of life in this heartbreaking accident. Stay tuned for further updates as authorities work to piece together the circumstances leading to this devastating incident.
