URGENT UPDATE: The Regional Food Bank of Northeast New York has just announced a groundbreaking pilot program aimed at connecting farmers in underserved communities with local food pantries. Launching in Ulster County, this initiative is set to revolutionize access to fresh produce for those in need.

Gail Hepworth, co-owner of her family’s historic farm, emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “There are neighborhoods that have systematically not been able to get food for a myriad of reasons.” The new micro-purchasing program will provide participating farmers with $6,000 a month, creating a sustainable pathway for local agriculture and food security.

Food Bank CEO Tom Nardacci confirmed the immediate demand, saying, “We’ve had a few pantries already who have said, ‘hey, we really can’t take more produce.’ That’s a good thing.” This statement highlights the growing success of the initiative, which aims to ensure that pantries across the region are stocked with healthy options.

Funding for this critical program comes from the COVID-era Nourish New York initiative, which seeks to address food insecurity exacerbated by the pandemic. New York State Senate Agriculture Chair Michelle Hinchey is advocating for increased funding, pushing for a total of $75 million to scale this vital support.

Hepworth described the dual benefits of the program: “Whether we’re giving it away or we’re getting money, clearly getting the money part is really a path to sustainability.” With local farmers receiving financial support, the food bank can focus on expanding its reach, ensuring more pantries can serve their communities effectively.

As this program rolls out, its impact on local farmers and food access will be closely monitored. Authorities are urging other regions to consider similar initiatives to combat food insecurity. The collaboration between farmers and pantries is a promising step toward a healthier future for all.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as more details emerge about the program’s implementation and success.
