UPDATE: New York’s health commissioner, Dr. Jim McDonald, has issued an urgent warning about a significant surge in COVID-19 cases as flu season ramps up. “What we’re seeing more of right now in New York state is COVID,” McDonald stated, highlighting a troubling trend. For every one person hospitalized due to the flu, there are three hospitalized for COVID-19.

As of November 26, 2025, vaccination rates show alarming declines, with New Yorkers receiving 30% fewer COVID-19 vaccines compared to last year. In some upstate counties, vaccination rates for flu are only between 20% to 30%, while COVID-19 vaccine rates are shockingly low at 6% to 10%.

McDonald expressed deep concern that many New Yorkers are not adequately prepared for the upcoming months. With the holiday season approaching, gatherings will increase, raising the risk of illness transmission. “You spread germs more effectively inside,” he cautioned. He strongly urges residents to get both their COVID-19 and flu vaccines to improve their defenses against respiratory illnesses.

The health commissioner’s warning is echoed by Dr. Danielle Wales from Albany Med Health System, who advises caution when considering over-the-counter immunity boosters. “Supplements some people find that they benefit them and that’s great, but you should remember if you get the flu and you get sick, you should make sure you’re reaching out to your doctor,” she noted.

The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated. As New Yorkers prepare for crowded holiday events, the need for vaccinations has never been more critical. Officials are calling for immediate action to boost vaccination numbers and ensure public health safety.

Residents are encouraged to visit local health clinics for vaccinations and consult their healthcare providers for tailored advice. The time to act is now—protect yourself and your loved ones this holiday season.
