US Navy Transitions to F-35C Jets: Key Changes Ahead
UPDATE: The United States Navy is set to enhance its air power by transitioning seven squadrons of FA-18E/F Super Hornets to the advanced F-35C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters. This significant upgrade comes as part of an urgent push for national security and is expected to impact operations at multiple naval bases.
Officials have confirmed that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is currently in preparation, aimed at assessing the environmental implications of this monumental shift. The F-35C is touted as the most advanced aircraft in the Navy’s arsenal, designed to outperform its predecessors and enhance operational capabilities worldwide.
According to Ted Brown, Installations and Environmental Public Affairs Officer, “The F-35C is being deployed globally, and this transition is crucial for our national security.” The Navy plans to base the new F-35C squadrons, totaling 70 jets, at either Naval Air Station Lemoore in California or Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.
If Lemoore is selected, the existing FA-18 Super Hornets will be relocated to Oceana, while Lemoore will become the dedicated hub for the F-35C aircraft. The entire home basing process is projected to unfold over the next ten years, starting in 2029.
“This is pivotal for maintaining advanced aircraft on our carriers, critical for protecting U.S. national interests,” Brown added. The EIS is expected to be finalized by 2027, with public comments open until January 4, 2026, allowing community input during this transformative period.
“NAS Lemoore is proud to serve as the home of the Navy’s F-35C community,” stated Captain Barrett Smith, NAS Lemoore Joint Strike Fighter Wing Commodore. “The F-35C is the cornerstone of the Navy’s 5th-generation air power and a critical investment in our nation’s security.”
As the Navy prepares for this crucial transition, the implications are clear: modern, stealthier aircraft are essential for ensuring superiority in air defense and operations across the globe. The Navy’s commitment to enhancing its capabilities underscores the urgent need for advanced military readiness.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops, and consider participating in the public comment period to voice your thoughts on this significant military transition.
