American Playwright Jeremy O. Harris Arrested for Drug Smuggling
Prominent American playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris was arrested in Japan on November 16, 2023, on suspicion of smuggling the psychedelic drug MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy. According to officials, Harris was apprehended at Naha Airport on the southern island of Okinawa for allegedly violating customs laws by possessing 0.78 grams (0.0275 ounces) of the substance in a tote bag.
Harris, aged 36, had arrived in Okinawa for sightseeing after departing from London’s Heathrow Airport two days earlier and transiting through Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan. The arrest took place shortly after his arrival, with customs officers noting that the drug was likely intended for personal use.
According to Tatsunori Fukuda, a spokesperson for the Okinawa Regional Customs, Harris was taken into custody by the Tomishiro police, who subsequently filed a criminal complaint with the Naha District Prosecutors’ Office for further investigation. Japanese authorities did not discover any additional drugs in his luggage, and Fukuda confirmed that investigations are ongoing. However, details regarding any comments made by Harris during this process remain undisclosed.
Japanese law allows for the detention of suspects for up to 23 days before indictment, a system that has faced criticism for its potential to infringe on the rights of the accused. Those found guilty of drug smuggling in Japan can face severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences.
Harris’s career took off with the controversial play “Slave Play,” which he wrote while studying at the Yale School of Drama. Premiering off-Broadway in 2018, the production garnered attention for its bold exploration of race, class, and sexuality, even sparking a petition for its closure. It moved to Broadway in 2019, earning a Tony nomination for Best Play, though it did not win.
In addition to his achievements in theatre, Harris has made appearances in small acting roles, including a cameo as himself in the rebooted series “Gossip Girl.” He has also served as a co-producer on several episodes of HBO’s acclaimed series “Euphoria.”
As the situation develops, there has been no immediate statement from representatives of Harris. The implications of this incident for his career and personal life remain to be seen, especially given the serious nature of the charges he faces in Japan.
