Southeast Side Residents Demand Police After Attempted Break-In
URGENT UPDATE: Residents of San Antonio’s Southeast Side are calling for increased police presence following a chilling attempted break-in captured on home surveillance cameras. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 a.m. last Sunday when a man entered the Yount family’s backyard and knocked on their back window.
Savana Yount described the unsettling experience, stating, “I immediately grabbed my phone, called the police,” after reviewing the footage that showed a shadowy figure attempting to access their home. The couple’s quick actions led to the man’s detention by police shortly after they dialed 911.
In a troubling twist, a spokesperson from the San Antonio Police Department revealed that the individual involved was experiencing a mental health crisis, but further details about the incident remain limited. Residents expressed growing concern as crime rates in the area appear to be on the rise, alongside complaints about gunshots being a frequent issue.
One neighbor, identified as Amber, voiced her fears, stating, “It’s pretty scary ’cause you never know what people are intending to do.” This sentiment reflects a growing unease among locals who feel increasingly vulnerable without a visible police presence.
Residents argue that the absence of regular patrols has coincided with the closure of Kate Schenck Elementary, which previously saw officers monitoring the neighborhood during school hours. “There has been a lot less officers patrolling the area because the school is no longer there,” one local noted, emphasizing the need for more security as crime becomes a prevalent issue.
Despite the fear, community members are leaning on each other for support. “We know our neighbors, we love the neighborhood,” Savana Yount added, highlighting the bond that helps them feel safer amidst the rising crime concerns. Yet, this recent incident has been a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking nearby.
As residents demand immediate action, the San Antonio community is left to wonder what measures will be taken to enhance safety and ensure that such incidents do not become a common occurrence. The call for more police presence is urgent as fear grips the Southeast Side.
