Walter F. Currie, Esteemed Engineer and Family Man, Dies at 91
Walter F. Currie, a respected engineer and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, at the age of 91. Surrounded by loved ones, Currie succumbed to a decade-long battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to both his profession and family.
Born on February 11, 1934, in Louisville, Kentucky, Walter was the only son of Floyd and Stella Currie. His journey took a significant turn in 1950 when he met his future wife, Catherine Louise Shelburn, a fellow student at Atherton High School. The two not only graduated together but also attended the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where Currie pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering. While at the university, he became an active member of the Air Force ROTC and joined the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, ultimately graduating in 1956.
Currie’s professional career began shortly after graduation when he founded Currie Aerospace Associates in 1961. Starting from modest beginnings in a spare bedroom on Louvre Avenue, the independent sales organization represented various national electronics manufacturers. Currie served as the sales engineer, with Catherine handling administrative duties. Over the years, the company expanded and was eventually renamed Currie, Peak, and Frazier, Inc., growing to employ 36 people.
A lifelong supporter of the University of Kentucky, Currie was known for his unwavering commitment to the institution. He regularly contributed to the university and took pride in dressing in Kentucky Blue while cheering for the school’s athletic teams. His love for education extended beyond his own pursuits, as he encouraged his family to embrace learning and understand the intricacies of the world around them.
Family was at the heart of Currie’s life. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Currie; his two sons, Scott Currie of Mosier, Oregon, and Beau Currie of Windermere, Florida; and five grandchildren, including Trevor Currie of Missoula, Montana, and Amanda Summers of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currie took great pride in his family and remained actively involved in their lives, always eager to celebrate their achievements.
A private memorial service will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, where Currie’s cremated remains will be interred alongside his parents, Floyd and Stella Currie. This section of the cemetery holds special significance, having been arranged by Colonel George E. Currie in 1894.
Walter F. Currie will be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, and professional, whose impact on those around him will be cherished for years to come.
