The spirit of generosity took center stage at the annual Sun Santa Family Christmas Party in Lowell, Massachusetts, where community members gathered to support families in need. Held at the Dom Polski Club, the event brought together local residents to celebrate the legacy of giving exemplified by the late Edward P. Kuczek, a longtime supporter of The Sun Santa Fund.

Reflecting on his father’s life, John Kuczek shared how Edward, who passed away in April at the age of 76, often spoke of his childhood experiences. Growing up in a modest apartment with his mother and siblings, Edward attributed his family’s holiday meals to the Salvation Army. “He wanted to give back,” John noted, emphasizing his father’s belief that those who have the means should help others.

The Sun Santa Family Christmas Party has become a cherished tradition, especially since it also honors Mary Kuczek, who passed away 16 years ago. This year marked the 17th annual celebration, organized by the Polish-Americans Veterans of Lowell, which showcased the community’s commitment to helping those less fortunate.

Guests enjoyed festive activities, including purchasing raffle tickets and savoring pizza while festive music filled the air. The highlight of the event was the arrival of Santa Claus, who delighted children and adults alike with photo opportunities and the chance to share their holiday wishes.

Tricia Indelicato, the lead organizer of the party and PAV Community Chairperson, expressed gratitude to all those who contribute to making the event possible each year. “It’s important for me to give back, and now that I see the need with the amount of people who are struggling, it makes it more important,” she stated.

Over the years, the Sun Santa Family Christmas Party has raised thousands for The Sun Santa Fund, which provides assistance to families in the 23 communities served by The Sun newspaper. Since its inception in 1988, the fund has ensured that struggling families can enjoy holiday meals and gifts.

The event’s founders, Dave Demaris and Peter Goyette, both former truck drivers for The Sun, initiated the gathering as a way to give back to the community. “We knew it was a good deal, because all the money was going back to the children of the community,” Demaris explained, adding that their motto is, “A child’s smile makes it all worthwhile.”

The impact of The Sun Santa Fund is substantial. In 2024, the program assisted 1,144 families, providing 2,528 children with toys and distributing $46,760 in food vouchers along with $75,840 in toy vouchers, according to Kevin Coughlin, president of Lowell Sun Charities. He remarked on the event’s ability to bring generations together, highlighting the sense of community it fosters.

The spirit of giving continues with additional events benefiting The Sun Santa Fund. On December 9, from 10 a.m. to noon, state Representative Jim Arciero will host a drive-in and drop-off event at the Littleton Police Department, encouraging attendees to bring new, unwrapped toys or checks made out to The Sun Santa Fund.

Additionally, from noon to 4 p.m. on the same day, Lowell Mayor Dan Rourke will host a “Pints for a Purpose” event at The Old Court, aiming to raise $10,000 to assist 100 families in Greater Lowell. Rourke will also lead a live auction at 2:30 p.m., with donations accepted in cash or check.

As the community comes together to support those in need, the legacy of giving continues to inspire goodwill and holiday cheer in Lowell.
