Jasmine Crockett’s Senate Ambitions Face Tough Competition in Texas
U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett is contemplating a last-minute bid for the Senate seat currently held by John Cornyn (R-TX), which will be contested in the upcoming 2026 election. Crockett, who has served in the House for just two years, faces significant challenges should she decide to enter the crowded race. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has publicly predicted that Crockett would struggle against whoever secures the Republican nomination.
Crockett’s potential candidacy adds to a Democratic primary already featuring former Representative Colin Allred and James Talarico, a state representative. Allred previously ran against Senator Ted Cruz in 2024 but did not succeed. The deadline for filing to run is Monday, and the stakes are high for Crockett as she evaluates her options.
Governor Abbott expressed his hope that Crockett will enter the race, suggesting that it would solidify Republican control of the seat. He stated, “Jasmine Crockett is about to learn the hard way that most Texans are very different from her district, her base, and her values. She’ll be pummeled for her progressive socialist agenda and get crushed by the Republican nominee for Senate.” Abbott characterized her potential candidacy as a path to political failure, indicating that many political figures have faced similar fates in Texas.
Despite these predictions, Crockett remains confident about her prospects. She emphasized her awareness of the political landscape, noting, “I’m not crazy. It’s weird that people believe that I could win the races that I won and I’m just like out here willy-nilly.” Her remarks suggest that she is seriously considering the implications of a Senate run and the viability of her campaign.
Polling conducted in October indicated that Crockett could lead a hypothetical primary by as much as 6 percentage points over Talarico and 18 points over Allred. These numbers suggest that she has a solid base of support, should she choose to proceed.
Should she win the Democratic primary, Crockett would likely face formidable Republican candidates, including Cornyn, who is running for reelection, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Representative Wesley Hunt. Recent polling shows a competitive race among Republican contenders, with Cornyn holding a narrow lead of just 0.3 percentage points over Paxton and nearly 10 points over Hunt.
As the political climate in Texas continues to evolve, the upcoming months will be critical for Crockett and other candidates. With the filing deadline approaching, her decision will not only impact her political future but also shape the dynamics of the Texas Senate race.
