Texas Launches Urgent Campaign Against Drunk Driving This Holiday
UPDATE: Texas officials are taking immediate action to combat drunk driving this holiday season, as alcohol-related crashes surge during this critical period. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a statewide campaign titled “Drive Sober. No Regrets,” urging residents to prioritize safety and plan for sober rides.
The campaign runs from December 12, 2023, through January 1, 2024, coinciding with heightened DWI enforcement across Texas. Last holiday season, the state recorded over 2,000 drunken-driving incidents, leading to 96 fatalities and 201 serious injuries, according to TxDOT data. Officials stress that these tragedies are entirely preventable.
The Garland Police Department is among several law enforcement agencies ramping up DWI patrols during this period, deploying both marked and unmarked units during nighttime hours. This proactive approach aims to deter impaired driving and enhance safety on the roads.
A first-time DWI conviction in Texas can impose fines that soar up to $17,000, alongside legal fees and elevated insurance rates. Moreover, additional expenses, such as bail and court-ordered programs, can push the total financial burden even higher.
Authorities are sending a clear message: impaired driving can have devastating physical, emotional, and financial consequences. Safety officials emphasize that planning ahead for a safe ride can save lives and prevent costly repercussions.
In a bid to promote responsible celebrations, the Dallas County DWI taskforce is also offering digital screen ads in both English and Spanish. These ads feature QR codes providing discounts of $20 or more for rideshare services like Lyft, making it easier for partygoers to find safe transportation home.
As the holiday festivities ramp up, officials urge everyone to take the pledge to drive sober and avoid the dangers of impaired driving. The stakes are high, and the need for vigilance is greater than ever.
Stay alert and prioritize safety this holiday season—your life and the lives of others depend on it. Share this information to help spread the word and keep our roads safe!
