Thailand Rejects Ceasefire, Intensifies Border Clashes with Cambodia
Tensions escalated along the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia as Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul reaffirmed his commitment to military action, rejecting a ceasefire proposed by US President Donald Trump. As fighter jets targeted positions in Cambodia, Anutin stated that Thailand would continue its military operations to ensure the safety of its territory and citizens.
In a Facebook post, Anutin declared that Thailand would persist in its military actions “until we feel no more harm and threats to our land and people.” This statement came just hours after Trump announced that he had facilitated a ceasefire between the two nations during discussions with Anutin and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on October 6, 2023. While Trump reported an agreement to “cease all shooting,” both leaders did not corroborate this assertion in their subsequent public statements, with Anutin firmly stating that no ceasefire was in effect.
The ongoing conflict has seen intense exchanges of heavy weaponry since October 2, 2023, marking some of the most significant fighting since clashes in July. The border dispute, spanning 817 km (approximately 508 miles), has led to casualties and heightened tensions, drawing international attention.
According to Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, a spokesperson for Thailand’s Defence Ministry, clashes have erupted across seven border provinces. He reported that Cambodian forces had utilized heavy artillery, compelling Thailand to respond. In contrast, Cambodia’s Information Ministry accused Thai forces of targeting bridges and buildings, escalating the conflict further.
The situation is particularly complex due to historical grievances and allegations surrounding landmines. Thailand has accused Cambodia of laying new mines, a claim that the Cambodian government denies. Anutin criticized Trump’s characterization of a recent incident involving a “roadside bomb” that injured Thai soldiers, asserting that the event was not accidental.
In a bid for clarity, Hun Manet has requested assistance from the US and Malaysia to investigate claims and gather intelligence regarding which side initiated the most recent hostilities. He emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to seeking a peaceful resolution consistent with previous agreements.
This latest surge in violence highlights the fragility of the ceasefire established in October 2023, which had aimed to quell long-standing tensions. Despite Trump’s efforts to mediate, the situation remains volatile, with both nations prepared for continued military engagement.
The White House has yet to respond to requests for comments on the ongoing clashes, leaving the international community to monitor developments closely as both countries navigate this precarious period in their relations.
