New Grocery Store Set to Open in Historic Downtown Carrollton

A new grocery store brand, Street Corner Urban Market, is preparing to make its debut in Carrollton, Texas. The store will occupy a former vintage shop at 1105 South Broadway St., located directly across from the historic downtown square. The opening is scheduled for spring 2026.

Headquartered in Topeka, Kansas, Street Corner is a small chain with a diverse range of retail concepts, including express kiosks and partner locations at gas stations. As of early 2025, the urban market concept boasts 47 locations across the United States, including cities like Fresno, California, and Rochester, New York. The Carrollton store will feature 2,500 square feet of retail space, positioning it between a convenience store and a large-scale grocery store.

Franchisee Leon Smith, a resident of downtown Carrollton for nearly a decade, expressed enthusiasm about filling a significant gap in the area’s retail offerings. “I’ve always noticed the need for some type of grocery chain down here,” Smith noted. “There’s just nothing down here for the residents — nowhere for them to go grab something quick.”

The historic downtown area has seen significant growth, with amenities that include family housing, luxury apartment complexes, a DART station, and various dining and entertainment options. The addition of a grocery store will provide residents with essential items such as groceries, beer and wine, flowers, produce, and ready-to-eat meals, all within walking distance.

Smith, who works in human resources at Baylor Scott & White, is venturing into the world of franchising with this new store. He aims to create a shopping experience reminiscent of Trader Joe’s, featuring many of the same vendors but tailored to a smaller scale.

Catering to community needs is a top priority for Smith. He plans to seek product recommendations from local residents to ensure that the store’s offerings reflect their preferences. “It’s not cookie cutter ‘this is the only way that it’s going to go,’” he stated. “I’m here to try to make it welcoming for everybody that’s around here. I’m a part of this community, so this is important to me, because I know the need for it.”

As the grocery landscape continues to evolve, the opening of Street Corner Urban Market is anticipated to enhance the shopping experience for Carrollton residents while contributing to the vibrancy of the historic downtown area.
