USC and Brown Cancel Basketball Game Following Campus Shooting
The scheduled men’s basketball game between the University of Southern California (USC) and Brown University has been canceled due to a tragic shooting incident on Brown’s campus. The shooting, which occurred on March 2, 2024, resulted in the deaths of two students and left nine others injured. This decision reflects the deep sorrow felt by both institutions in the wake of this violence.
Community Response and Future Plans
In a heartfelt statement, USC’s head coach Eric Musselman expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the entire Brown community. “We are heartbroken by the tragedy on Brown University’s campus,” he stated. “We are thinking of them and wishing them strength during this extremely difficult time.”
As a result of the cancellation, USC has arranged to play against UC Santa Cruz instead. This game will take place at USC’s Galen Center on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at 13:00 local time. Musselman thanked UC Santa Cruz for accommodating the Trojans on such short notice, allowing the team to remain active during this challenging period.
All tickets purchased for the original matchup against Brown will still be honored for the game against UC Santa Cruz. Further information will be communicated to ticket holders in advance of the new game.
Impact on Brown’s Athletic Schedule
Brown University has also canceled its scheduled women’s basketball game against Monmouth, which was set to take place on the same day. Both games were intended to be the first events since the shooting, which has left the campus community in mourning and shock.
As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on supporting those affected by the violence. The basketball programs at both universities are navigating the delicate balance of honoring the victims while continuing to engage with their sports communities.
The incident has ignited discussions surrounding campus safety and gun violence, emphasizing the need for support and healing within educational institutions. The response from both USC and Brown reflects a commitment to prioritizing the well-being of their students and communities in the face of tragedy.
