UPDATE: Oklahoma coach Porter Moser is grieving the loss of beloved figure Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, who passed away last week at the age of 106. Moser, reflecting on their friendship, expressed his sadness during a press conference at SEC media day in Birmingham on Wednesday. He stated, “My heart is sad,” revealing plans to attend Sister Jean’s funeral mass in Chicago on Thursday.

Moser described Sister Jean as a profound influence in his life, stating, “It’s also joy and gratitude that she was in my life.” Known for her energetic spirit, she became a national icon during Loyola-Chicago’s incredible NCAA tournament run in 2018, where she captured hearts across the nation, including President Joe Biden, who famously sent her flowers.

Those who knew Sister Jean admired her remarkable independence. Moser recounted her vibrant presence on campus, recalling how she often donned her favorite sneakers with “Sister” on one shoe and “Jean” on the other. He shared a touching story of seeing her walk back to the dorms at 8:30 p.m. on a frigid Chicago night when she was 98 years old. Despite his offer of a ride, she insisted on walking, demonstrating her self-sufficiency and spirit.

Moser highlighted Sister Jean’s unwavering passion for basketball. He remembered how she would shush anyone disrupting her game-watching experience, showing her dedication to the sport she loved. “She was such a basketball fan,” he remarked, emphasizing her warmth and kindness to others.

Having been an integral part of Loyola-Chicago basketball since 1991, Sister Jean actively prayed for both the Ramblers and their opponents. Even after Moser’s move to Oklahoma in 2021, they maintained their friendship, with Moser attending her 105th and 106th birthday celebrations.

As Moser prepares to honor Sister Jean, he reflects on her legacy, stating, “There will never be another person like Sister Jean.” He underscored her significance, saying, “She meant everything to all of us before she became, in her words, the international star — not just a national star.”

This heartfelt tribute underscores the profound impact Sister Jean had on countless lives, solidifying her legacy as a symbol of positivity and love in the world of sports.
