URGENT UPDATE: A frost advisory is now in effect for several counties in Pennsylvania, effective from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. on October 20, 2023. The National Weather Service warns residents in Franklin, Dauphin, Lebanon, Cumberland, Adams, York, and Lancaster counties to prepare for potentially damaging frost as temperatures are expected to plunge into the 30s.

The advisory highlights that “temperatures in the 30s will result in frost formation,” posing a significant threat to sensitive outdoor vegetation. “Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered,” officials caution.

This advisory underscores the urgency for homeowners and farmers to take immediate action. Those with agricultural interests should move sensitive plants indoors or cover them before nightfall to retain heat. The National Weather Service emphasizes that valley locations and sheltered rural areas will experience the coldest temperatures, increasing the risk of frost damage.

Frost advisories are typically issued from May to October, with the potential for extension based on weather conditions. They are declared when temperatures drop to 36 degrees Fahrenheit or below, with severe frost capable of ending the growing season—often referred to as a “killing frost.”

Residents are urged to act quickly to protect their plants. If you have sensitive vegetation, make sure to cover them before sunset or bring them indoors if possible. The risk of frost damage is real, and taking these precautions could save your garden.

Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops. Share this information with friends and family to ensure everyone is prepared for the cold snap.
