Philadelphia Experts Warn Against Quick Online Hormone Prescriptions

Women over 40 are increasingly seeking quick online consultations for hormone therapies related to menopause, but local experts in Philadelphia are sounding warnings about the risks involved. These treatments promise rapid relief from symptoms such as weight gain, brain fog, insomnia, and hot flashes. However, health care professionals caution that these prescriptions may not always be safe or appropriate.
Dr. Robyn Faye, an OB-GYN and certified menopause practitioner with Jefferson Health, described the current situation as “the wild, wild West.” She noted that many women are driven to seek information online due to feelings of desperation. “‘I don’t feel like myself, my family hates me, I hate myself and fix me,’” she recounted, reflecting the urgency many feel in managing their symptoms.
During fast online appointments, Dr. Faye has observed that patients often receive prescriptions without a thorough assessment. She recently encountered a case where a patient, seeking immediate answers, was prescribed estrogen and progesterone without a complete evaluation of her medical history. This patient had a high risk for cardiovascular disease, which could have been exacerbated by hormone therapy.
Hormone therapy is generally deemed safe and effective for many women experiencing perimenopause or menopause, providing substantial relief from debilitating symptoms. Dr. Arina Chesnokova, an OB-GYN at Penn Medicine, explained that for those who qualify, the benefits can be transformative. Hormone therapy can help manage hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disruptions, leading to improved overall well-being. “Once terrible hot flashes and night sweats are managed, people usually sleep better,” Dr. Chesnokova stated, adding that better sleep can enhance mood and cognitive function.
Despite the potential benefits, both Dr. Faye and Dr. Chesnokova emphasize that hormone therapy is not a universal solution. Those with a history of breast cancer, heart disease, blood clots, or stroke should avoid hormone treatments, as should women over the age of 60 or those more than ten years past their last menstrual period. “You might go back to the gym because you’re finally feeling better, but they’re not going to make you lose weight,” Dr. Faye cautioned.
The quality of online hormone products also raises concerns. Dr. Chesnokova advises women to be wary of the multitude of advertisements for hormone therapies available online, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the effectiveness and safety of these products.
In response to these issues, proposed legislation in New Jersey aims to ensure insurance companies cover menopause treatment and to raise awareness about the available options. The bill seeks to improve access to safe and effective menopause care for women.
To further discuss these topics, Dr. Faye and Dr. Chesnokova will be participating in a free event titled “Reimagining Menopause” on October 21, 2023, at WHYY in Philadelphia. The event will include a panel discussion and an opportunity for attendees to engage with the experts.
While securing an appointment with a menopause specialist can be challenging, both doctors recommend finding qualified health care professionals who can thoroughly evaluate the risks and benefits of hormone therapy. Additionally, lifestyle changes such as a balanced diet and regular exercise can help alleviate menopause symptoms.
As women navigate the complexities of menopause, the importance of informed and individualized care remains paramount.
