Viktor Gyokeres Struggles to Find the Net at Arsenal
Viktor Gyokeres joined Arsenal with a reputation as a prolific goalscorer, having netted an impressive 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting. However, following his transfer, the forward has not found the back of the net in over a month, recording six consecutive matches without a goal. This situation raises concerns, particularly as he was recently awarded the European Golden Shoe at the Ballon d’Or awards.
Former Coventry assistant manager Adi Viveash commented on Gyokeres’ mindset, stating, “He would get frustrated if he went three or four games without a goal.” His current tally of three goals in ten matches for Arsenal is not alarming, especially given that the club has won eight of those fixtures. Nonetheless, expectations remain high, as Gyokeres averaged 35 goals across two seasons in Portugal.
The striker’s lack of impact in critical matches against Liverpool and both Manchester clubs has intensified scrutiny. Questions arise about how many starts Gyokeres would have had if teammate Kai Havertz had been fully fit. Despite this, the atmosphere at Arsenal suggests that there is no need for concern. Bukayo Saka remarked, “He’s a big part of the reason why we’re winning these games,” while manager Mikel Arteta praised Gyokeres’ contributions to the team’s success.
Arsenal’s coaching staff highlight the importance of Gyokeres’ role beyond scoring. Arteta noted that Gyokeres “stretches the back four and opens spaces,” which is vital to the team’s attacking strategy. Statistical evidence supports this assertion, as only Ollie Watkins has made more runs challenging the opposition’s defence than Gyokeres in the current Premier League season. His aggressive running style offers a different approach compared to previous forwards, such as Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
One notable instance occurred during a match against Newcastle, where Gyokeres’ run down the right channel drew Malick Thiaw out of position, creating a significant gap that Arsenal nearly exploited. Arteta frequently emphasizes the need to find “open spaces” in his tactical discussions, and Gyokeres’ ability to create these openings is invaluable.
Jon Dahl Tomasson, former Sweden manager, lauded Gyokeres’ movement, stating that his channel runs are “at an extremely high level” and that he ranks among the “best in the world” for such movements. Even when Gyokeres is not directly involved in the action, his presence can create opportunities for other players. He is marked more closely than any other Premier League player this season, indicating the respect he commands from defenders.
Gyokeres often attracts multiple defenders, which can lead to open chances for teammates. In the match against Newcastle, Eberechi Eze capitalized on the space left by Gyokeres, who was closely guarded by both Thiaw and Sven Botman. Similarly, against West Ham, Eze found room to shoot due to Gyokeres’ positioning, which ultimately led to Declan Rice’s opener.
Saka expressed gratitude for Gyokeres’ contributions, highlighting his ability to hold the ball and make threatening runs. Additionally, Gyokeres’ off-the-ball pressing has shown improvement compared to previous Arsenal forwards. While Havertz was known for his pressing capabilities, Gyokeres has proven adept at creating turnovers, enhancing the team’s defensive efforts.
Despite the praise for his work ethic, the primary expectation for Gyokeres remains scoring goals. Saka remains confident, stating, “His goals will come. We know that, we believe that, and we believe in him.” The team is assured of Gyokeres’ positive outlook and commitment on the pitch.
Arsenal has encountered similar situations with forwards in the past. For instance, it took time for Havertz to adapt, as his first goal from open play came late in November during his debut season. Gyokeres has faced similar challenges in his career, having struggled initially at Brighton and starting slowly at Coventry.
As both Gyokeres and Arsenal adjust to each other’s playing styles, the hope is that upcoming fixtures will provide him with a platform to find his scoring touch. Arsenal supporters will be eagerly watching how he develops in the coming matches, starting with their clash against Fulham this Saturday.
