Celebrated Biologist David E. Brest Passes Away at 85

David E. Brest, a beloved biologist and educator, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by his wife, Patricia Brest. A lifelong resident of Southern California, David was born in San Gabriel, where he was the youngest of three boys. His early years were marked by a deep appreciation for nature, fostered through family camping trips and outdoor adventures with his twin brother, Dennis.
David’s academic journey began at the University of Oregon, where he studied Forestry. He later earned a PhD in Biology from UCLA. This academic rivalry with his brother, who supported the University of Southern California, became a light-hearted aspect of their relationship. David dedicated 35 years to teaching in the Biology Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, before retiring in 2003.
Legacy of Education and Family
Throughout his career, David was known for his engaging lectures. His humorous and insightful teaching style often included his famous photosynthesis lecture, which he delivered in both serious and lighthearted contexts. David and Patricia met at CSUDH, where his humor and intellect captivated her, leading to their marriage in June 1987.
A devoted family man, David was loyal to his loved ones, including both two-legged and four-legged family members. He approached challenges with a calm focus, whether solving a tricky sudoku puzzle or navigating difficult conversations. David’s reassuring presence was a source of comfort for those around him, much like a lighthouse guiding ships through stormy seas.
David leaves behind cherished memories of family camping trips to iconic locations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and Sequoia National Park. In a fitting tribute, his ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove beside the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows.
Remembering a Life Well-Lived
David is survived by his wife, Patricia Brest, as well as his stepchildren Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst. He is also remembered fondly by his grandchildren, Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, and Casey and Jay Pabst. Additionally, he leaves behind his niece and nephews—Carol (James) Brest Hare, Brian (Lonni) Brest, Art (Donna) Brest, Mike (Cathy) Brest, and Matthew Brest—along with two sisters-in-law, Nan and Bridgetta Brest.
David’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter for his family and friends, who will miss his warmth, intellect, and unwavering support. His legacy as an educator and devoted family member will continue to inspire those who knew him.
