Heroic Truck Driver Logs 30,000 Miles for Marching Band

In a remarkable display of community spirit, Dave Tanis has driven over 30,000 miles to support the Jenison Marching Band, ensuring that instruments and equipment reach competitions across the United States. For nearly three decades, Tanis, the owner of Tanis Trucking, has volunteered as the band’s equipment hauler, a role he has maintained since his daughters were members in the late 1990s.
Tanis, now 69 years old, dedicates his weekends from September through mid-November to transport a wide array of instruments, including tubas, marimbas, and timpani drums. His commitment extends to local and out-of-state competitions, including prestigious events like the Fiesta Bowl in Arizona and the Macy’s Day Parade in New York City. Each weekend, he helps load the band’s green and black semi-trailer, which is filled with thousands of pounds of gear vital for the students’ performances.
Building Memories Through Music
Tanis’s journey with the band began in 1997, when his eldest daughter, Rebecca, was in her second year with the group. He recalls fondly the time he drove to the Fiesta Bowl with his daughter Lindsay, who joined the band two years later. They shared a memorable moment watching the sunset over the canyon in Arizona, a memory he cherishes deeply, especially after the tragic loss of Rebecca in 2021.
The Jenison community has come to recognize Tanis not only for his driving skills but also for his unwavering support of the band. David Zamborsky, the band director, emphasizes Tanis’s significant role beyond just transportation. He often attends rehearsals and celebrates the band’s achievements, exhibiting a passion that resonates with both students and staff.
“He takes so much joy in being around the band,” Zamborsky noted, highlighting the positive impact Tanis has on the students. His presence is a constant reminder of the values of discipline and teamwork that the band instills in its members.
A Legacy of Giving Back
Initially, Jenison reimbursed Tanis for fuel and mileage, but he soon chose to volunteer his services for free, believing this would allow the band to allocate funds to more essential needs like instruments and uniforms. Tanis reflects on the importance of the life skills that students gain from their participation in the band.
“I thought, if I support it that way, they can spend their money on instruments or uniforms or something else,” he stated. His commitment is driven by a desire to give back to a program that fosters a strong community for its students.
Tanis finds immense fulfillment in witnessing the “light bulb” moments when students master challenging pieces of music. He takes pride in their growth and development, particularly during the annual spring concert when seniors share their post-graduation plans.
“It’s pretty cool,” he said, wiping a tear from his eye. “That’s why I do it.”
Dave Tanis’s dedication serves as a powerful reminder of the impact individuals can have on their communities. His selfless actions not only support the Jenison Marching Band but also inspire others to contribute to the growth and success of young musicians.
