Traffic Surge Expected as Costco Opens Near Saratoga

URGENT UPDATE: A significant traffic increase is imminent for residents of Saratoga, California, as a new Costco is set to open at Prospect and Lawrence in San José. This development, expected to commence operations in October 2023, could lead to a staggering 10-fold increase in vehicle trips through the area, fundamentally impacting community safety and traffic conditions.
Residents are advised to prepare for heightened congestion, especially during weekends and evenings. As shoppers flock to the new warehouse, the influx of traffic will spill over into local neighborhoods and schools, directly affecting daily commutes. The situation has prompted urgent calls from city officials, including Councilmember Rosemary Kamei, who is advocating for enhanced traffic management and safety measures.
The existing roads in Saratoga are already struggling with high speeds and limited safety features. Many local streets lack sidewalks, making pedestrians vulnerable. Officials report that wide lanes and long sightlines often encourage drivers to exceed posted speed limits. Mayor Belal Aftab emphasizes the need for immediate action to address these challenges, urging residents to adopt safer walking habits.
To mitigate the impending risks, Mayor Aftab has outlined three crucial recommendations for the community. First, residents should utilize reflective gear and carry small flashlights while walking during early morning or after dusk. Second, he encourages modeling safe driving behaviors—such as full stops at stop signs and slower turns at intersections. Lastly, he invites community feedback on traffic concerns and potential improvements, emphasizing that many safety initiatives stem from resident suggestions.
The impact of the new Costco is underscored by the current traffic issues already plaguing the area, such as the morning congestion around schools near Fruitvale Avenue and the dangerous intersections along Quito Road. Mayor Aftab has acknowledged the urgency of these issues, stating, “Every extra minute we spend idling on Highway 85 is a minute we’re not with family or friends.”
In preparation for the expected surge, city officials have already taken proactive measures, adding buffered bike lanes, refreshing crosswalks, and lowering speed limits in school zones. Although these efforts may seem minimal, they are essential for creating a safer environment for residents, particularly children.
As the community braces for the upcoming traffic increase, local leaders are calling for a collective effort. “A calmer Saratoga is a safer one,” Aftab stated, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in improving local road safety. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in advocating for necessary changes.
With the season changing, Saratoga faces a pivotal moment. The community’s response to the incoming traffic surge will determine not only the safety of its streets but also the quality of life for its residents. Stay tuned for further updates as developments unfold regarding this critical issue.
