A new chapter in affordable housing has begun in Clarkston with the grand opening of Holy Family Haven, which offers 72 affordable apartments. Local students from Holy Family Catholic School played an essential role in the complex’s naming, contributing ideas and artwork that inspired the project. According to Jonathan Mallahan, executive director of Catholic Charities Housing, half of the units are currently occupied, with additional families moving in soon.

The official blessing of Holy Family Haven took place during a ceremony attended by city leaders, community members, and representatives from Catholic Charities and the Horizon Housing Alliance. Mallahan expressed gratitude for the involvement of the school’s students, who celebrated the occasion with artwork displays, performances of their school song, and enthusiastic cheers.

Community Impact and Future Prospects

During her opening remarks, Monika Lawrence, Mayor of Clarkston, highlighted the commitment of John Pilcher, executive director of Horizon Housing Alliance, to deliver a high-quality housing project. Pilcher emphasized that Holy Family Haven is designed to provide families with a safe and secure environment, distinguishing it from a homeless shelter by fostering a true sense of community.

With 30% of the units still available, families interested in applying can reach out to Catholic Charities for further information. Mallahan stated, “It’s not just a place to live. It’s a foundation for families to make lasting changes in their lives and achieve their goals.” The complex not only offers housing but also a comprehensive suite of support services aimed at helping families in need.

Support Services and Financial Backing

Holy Family Haven will provide essential support services, including mental health counseling, substance abuse recovery assistance, transportation to medical appointments, senior support, and employment aid. A food distribution program focusing on fresh, healthy options is also part of the initiative.

Funding for the construction was made possible by KeyBank Community Development Lending & Investment, which contributed $31.4 million. The housing units cater to families and individuals earning between 30% to 60% of the area median income, with 35 units specifically designated for individuals who have experienced homelessness.

For those interested in applying for the apartments, applications can be submitted through the website housing.cceasternwa.org/how-to-apply. The establishment of Holy Family Haven marks a significant advancement in providing affordable housing solutions for Clarkston’s residents.
