South Glens Falls Girls’ Soccer Advances with Win Over Troy
SOUTH GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — In a tightly contested match, the South Glens Falls High School girls’ soccer team defeated Troy High School 1-0 in the first round of the Class AA Section II playoffs on March 15, 2024. The Bulldogs’ victory was marked by a strong defensive performance and a crucial goal from junior midfielder Emeri Buckley.
The first half of the game showcased a defensive standstill, with neither team managing to score. At halftime, the score remained tied at 0-0, and Bulldogs head coach Stephen Philo praised his team’s defense. “We didn’t give up any corners and were able to suffocate any offensive pressure they had,” he stated, highlighting the effectiveness of his players.
The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when Buckley found the back of the net. The Bulldogs had been pushing offensively but had struggled to convert their chances. After a cross into the opposing box, the ball bounced around until it reached Buckley, who capitalized on the opportunity with a well-placed shot. “I feel like we worked really well together,” Buckley commented on the play. “It definitely wasn’t just me there. We did a really good job with our crossing and team spirit was high.”
Philo was not surprised by Buckley’s contribution, emphasizing her value to the team. “She’s the first team all-star player for a reason,” he remarked. “She showed how valuable she is tonight, both on offense and defense.”
Following the goal, South Glens Falls maintained control of the match, with their midfield and defensive units effectively neutralizing any threats from the Flying Horses. Philo commended the performances of Gianna Marissal, Jaielynn Curley, Emilia Osakowicz, and goalkeeper Emmalee Sheeran, noting that they limited Troy’s chances in transition.
With this victory, the Bulldogs advance to face the top-seeded Mohonasen High School in the next round of the playoffs. The match is scheduled for Friday at 16:30 local time. Philo acknowledges the challenge ahead, stating, “That’s gonna be a different beast. They’re undefeated for a reason. They’re a very talented team, and we’re going to go down there and put our best foot forward and see what happens.”
As the Bulldogs prepare for this upcoming challenge, their confidence is bolstered by their recent performance, setting the stage for an exciting playoff run.
