El Reno Community Mourns Fallen Officer Sgt. Thomas Duran

UPDATE: The city of El Reno, Oklahoma is in mourning after the tragic death of Sgt. Thomas Duran, who was killed in the line of duty. Duran was struck by a vehicle on October 17, 2023, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from the community.

Last night, family, friends, and law enforcement from across the state gathered at OU Medical Center for an emotional honor walk, recognizing Duran’s wish to be an organ donor. “We took that call knowing it’s one of yours, one of your own, and it’s difficult,” stated Chief Ken Brown. “Imagine even a loss or injury to a family member.”

As part of the tributes, dozens of flowers were placed on top of a police car outside the El Reno Police Station, symbolizing the community’s solidarity and respect for Duran’s service.

At the Elks Lodge, a fundraising event is underway to support Duran’s family. “100% of everything that comes in tonight, including tips, is going right back to the family,” said Jared Holden, a representative of the lodge. The event features a $10 spaghetti dinner, providing a space for the community to gather, heal, and show their support.

“It’s been a beautiful coming together as well to support this event,” Holden added. “You don’t just have people from our community come in and support it; you have people from other communities. This just goes to show that this community is strong, and there’s nothing going to hold us down.”

This tragedy has brought the El Reno community closer, highlighting the impact of Duran’s service and sacrifice. Support efforts continue to grow as residents rally together to honor a fallen hero.
