Nick Mangold, Jets Legend, Dies at 41 After Kidney Disease Battle
BREAKING: Nick Mangold, the legendary center of the New York Jets and a seven-time Pro Bowler, has died at the age of 41 due to complications from kidney disease, the team announced today. Mangold had been undergoing dialysis treatments since spring 2023 and expressed gratitude to his family and friends for their support during his health struggle.
In a heartfelt letter to the Jets community, Mangold revealed, “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.” His passing marks a profound loss for the Jets organization and its fans.
Mangold, drafted in 2006 from Ohio State, was a cornerstone of the Jets’ offensive line, missing only four starts during his eleven-year career. Jets owner Woody Johnson paid tribute, stating, “Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade.” His leadership and toughness defined a pivotal era in Jets football.
Emotions ran high as former coach Rex Ryan reacted live on ESPN, fighting back tears while recalling the deep bond he shared with Mangold. “It’s brutal, such a great young man that I had the pleasure to coach,” Ryan said. “He was injured, but he came up to me and said he was going to play. He was going to play for me.”
Mangold’s accolades include making the Pro Bowl every season from 2008 to 2015, except for 2012. He was honored as a First Team All-Pro twice and earned a second-team selection once. Christopher Johnson, Jets vice chairman, reflected on Mangold’s legacy, stating, “He was the embodiment of consistency, strength, and leadership.”
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, Mangold was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor on June 2, 2022, alongside D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Darrelle Revis. “On behalf of the entire Johnson family and the New York Jets organization, we offer our sincere condolences to Jenny, their four children — Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte,” Johnson added. “Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet.”
As the Jets community mourns this tragic loss, fans and players alike are encouraged to share their memories and tributes to a player who left an indelible mark on the franchise. The impact of Mangold’s legacy will continue to resonate within the hearts of those he inspired both on and off the field.
