Community Remembers Donald Dicklich, Dedicated Public Servant
Donald Dicklich, a respected member of his community and a dedicated public servant, passed away on October 27, 2025, following a lengthy battle with esophageal cancer. He was known for his commitment to both his family and the various roles he held throughout his life, contributing significantly to the areas he served.
Born to Bogdan “Bob” Dicklich and Mildred Kelsey Dicklich, Donald grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota, where he attended local schools and proudly graduated in 1971. During his high school years, he was a key member of the 1970 3rd place State Championship Hockey Team, a highlight that showcased his early leadership skills and team spirit.
After high school, Donald pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business. He later returned to the university to complete an MBA, further enhancing his professional qualifications. In June 1975, he married Mary Zanoni, with whom he had two daughters, Gina Marie and Dawn Michele.
Donald began his career with U.S. Steel Corp., initially working at the Mintac Mine and Plant. He later transitioned to the USS Great Lakes Fleet, where he was involved in shipping products across the Great Lakes. His experience in management eventually led him to a 14-year tenure in Healthcare Administration at what is now known as Essentia Health.
In the years that followed, Donald held the position of Administrative Manager and Chief Financial Officer at the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, an economic development agency for the State of Minnesota. His leadership capabilities were recognized when he was appointed as the St. Louis County Auditor-Treasurer by the County Board. He subsequently won three elections, serving nearly 15 years in this role until his retirement in January 2019.
Beyond his professional achievements, Donald was deeply involved in his church community. He served on several church boards and was an active participant in the Men’s Club and choir, demonstrating his commitment to community service and spiritual life.
Donald is preceded in death by his grandparents, Rade and Milica Dicklich and Riley and Emilie Kelsey, as well as his parents. He is survived by his daughters, Gina Lund and Dawn Verdone, and siblings, including Ron (Samantha) Dicklich, Diana (Paul) Broste, and Cherilyn McEnery (Friend Scott). Additionally, he leaves behind five nieces, a nephew, eight grandnieces and grandnephews, and a granddaughter, Kennady Lund, who was the apple of his eye.
Donald Dicklich’s legacy is one of dedication to family, community, and public service, and he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. His contributions to the community and his unwavering commitment to service have left a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.
