Flock Safety Fights to Restore Hillsborough License Plate Reader Deal
UPDATE: Flock Safety is urgently seeking to reverse the recent termination of its contract for license plate readers in Hillsborough, N.C.. The town canceled the deal earlier this week due to rising concerns over data privacy and usage.
In a significant move, Hillsborough officials halted the agreement for ten cameras, which were intended solely for local law enforcement to track vehicles involved in serious crimes. Mayor Mark Bell highlighted alarming details about the contract, stating, “Flock retains the right to all the data and can share it with third parties and government agencies in very vague language.” This revelation sparked concerns that the technology could be misused beyond the town’s original intent.
In response, Flock Safety announced on Friday that it is eager to address these issues directly with town leaders. Flock’s Chief Legal Officer, Dan Haley, asserted that misconceptions about their technology are driving the town’s decision. “The publicly stated reasons for Hillsborough’s action are entirely based in misconceptions about our technology,” Haley emphasized.
He clarified the company’s policy regarding data access. “Even when Flock gets a court order or a subpoena, we consult with the client first unless expressly prohibited. The agencies that use Flock control access to their data, period,” Haley stated, asserting that local law enforcement would maintain oversight of the information gathered.
The town’s spokesperson confirmed that their attorney is currently reviewing the situation, but no specific plans have been disclosed about the next steps. Mayor Bell noted the financial implications, revealing that the installation and operation would have cost more than $81,000, a sum the town may not recover.
Flock Safety is hopeful that through open dialogue, the issues can be resolved and the technology can be implemented to enhance public safety in Hillsborough. “We have a high degree of confidence that when given the opportunity to speak with our partners in Hillsborough, we will resolve their concerns,” Haley stated.
As discussions progress, the situation remains fluid, with many residents keenly watching how this dispute will unfold. The outcome could significantly impact not just local law enforcement capabilities but also the broader conversation around privacy and surveillance technology in communities across the country.
Stay tuned for the latest developments on this urgent matter, as Hillsborough officials and Flock Safety work towards a resolution that addresses community concerns while ensuring public safety remains a top priority.
