Diplomatic Leaders Demand Immediate Ceasefire Amid Sudan Crisis

The foreign ministers of Germany, Jordan, and the United Kingdom have urgently called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan as violence escalates in the Darfur region. This plea follows the paramilitary group, known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), seizing control of the significant city of el-Fasher, prompting dire humanitarian warnings from various international officials.

At a security summit in Bahrain on October 28, 2023, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described the situation in el-Fasher as “apocalyptic.” Reports indicate that the RSF has committed atrocities, including mass killings, targeting civilians based on ethnicity, and sexual violence. United Nations officials have reported that more than 450 individuals have died in a hospital as a result of the ongoing conflict. Despite RSF’s denial of involvement in these deaths, satellite imagery and social media videos suggest a grave humanitarian crisis unfolding in the city.

Cooper emphasized the urgent need for international cooperation to address the escalating violence and humanitarian disaster. She stated, “Just as a combination of leadership and international cooperation has made progress in Gaza, it is currently badly failing to deal with the humanitarian crisis and the devastating conflict in Sudan.” Her comments highlighted the severe lack of attention given to the crisis, which has led to what she termed “truly horrifying atrocities.”

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul echoed Cooper’s sentiments, directly condemning the violence perpetrated by the RSF in el-Fasher. He noted, “Sudan is absolutely an apocalyptic situation,” underscoring the urgent need for global action.

Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi criticized the international community for not giving Sudan the attention it deserves. He remarked on the “inhumane proportions” of the humanitarian crisis, insisting, “We’ve got to stop that.”

The situation in Sudan has deteriorated markedly, with reports of starvation and the use of rape as a weapon of war. Cooper pointed out that “no amount of aid can resolve a crisis of this magnitude until the guns fall silent,” emphasizing that humanitarian efforts cannot succeed without an end to hostilities.

The international community faces significant challenges in addressing the conflict, which has led to a massive displacement of people and an urgent need for humanitarian assistance. The reason for this withdrawal remains unclear, although it coincided with the publication of a story about activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who began a hunger strike to protest his detention.
