UPDATE: The 14th annual Stone Crab Eating Contest has officially kicked off the stone crab season in the Florida Keys, with Jonathan Martinescu of Fort Myers taking first place in a thrilling competition held at Key Fisheries in Marathon on November 1, 2025. Martinescu completed the challenge by cracking and consuming 25 stone crab claws in just 9 minutes and 46 seconds, showcasing an innovative strategy that involved using an oversized spoon.

The event drew 50 contestants divided into 10 two-person teams, all racing against the clock to devour as many claws as possible. Participants faced penalties for any claw meat left behind, adding an extra layer of urgency to the contest.

Martinescu humorously credited his victory to his “big spoon” approach, saying, “So, my strategy was a spoon…a lot bigger of a spoon.” His unique method clearly paid off, as he outpaced his competitors in this lively kickoff to the annual stone crab harvest season, which runs from October 15 to May 1 each year.

In a fierce display of skill and speed, the team competition was won by Tom Zajac and Ryan Beckett, who finished with a remarkable time of 6 minutes and 15 seconds. Their victory added to the excitement of the day, as teams and individuals alike displayed determination and competitive spirit.

The atmosphere at Key Fisheries was electric, with participants armed with various utensils, from hammers to mallets, ready to tackle the challenge. As the event commenced, spectators cheered on their favorites, making for an unforgettable experience that celebrated both the local culture and the delicious stone crab delicacy.

As the stone crab season unfolds, this annual contest continues to attract attention, not just for its quirky nature but also for its role in highlighting the culinary delights of the Florida Keys. The festive environment and community engagement make the Stone Crab Eating Contest a must-see event for locals and tourists alike.
