UAA Appoints Dr. Jay Butler as New Dean of College of Health
The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) has appointed Dr. Jay Butler as the new dean of its College of Health, effective December 28, 2025. Dr. Butler, a renowned expert in infectious diseases, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to this pivotal role. His extensive background includes six years as the deputy director for infectious diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta.
Dr. Butler’s career spans various significant positions in state, federal, and tribal health sectors. He has served as Alaska’s chief medical officer and led the epidemiology section of the Alaska Division of Public Health. Additionally, he directed the CDC’s Arctic Investigations Program and was the senior director of community health services for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. His previous experience as an affiliate professor at UAA further solidifies his connection to the university.
UAA’s Vision for Health Education
In a statement regarding Dr. Butler’s appointment, UAA Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Denise Runge, expressed enthusiasm for the new dean’s arrival. She emphasized that Butler’s deep expertise will enhance the College of Health’s mission.
“Dr. Butler joins UAA at an exciting time for our university,” Runge stated. “His leadership and commitment to Alaska will be instrumental in strengthening UAA’s position as the state’s designated health university. We are thrilled to welcome him into a role supported by a strong team of faculty, staff, and leaders within the College of Health.”
As the new dean, Dr. Butler will oversee initiatives aimed at improving health education and addressing public health challenges in Alaska and beyond. His leadership is expected to drive forward UAA’s strategic goals in health-related education and research.
The appointment comes at a critical juncture for the university, as it seeks to reinforce its reputation as a center for health education in the region.
