A shooting incident at an Airbnb rental in Bath Township, Ohio, left nine individuals injured early on March 10, 2024. The incident occurred during a large birthday party at the property, which had been advertised on social media, attracting a significant crowd.

Police were alerted to the situation around 12:16 a.m. after reports of gunfire in the 900 block of Top of the Hill Drive. Upon arriving, officers encountered a chaotic scene and administered life-saving aid to those injured, stated Bath Township Police Chief Vito Sinopoli.

Nine victims, comprising both juveniles and adults, were transported to local hospitals, though their current medical conditions have not been disclosed. “Our deepest sympathy goes out to the victims, families, and all those affected by this devastating incident,” Sinopoli said during a press conference later that morning.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including police and fire departments from Akron, Copley, Fairlawn, and Richfield, assisted at the scene. Sinopoli emphasized the community’s need for safety, stating, “This kind of violence is unacceptable, and we’re committed to applying all available resources to this investigation.”

Investigation Underway

Authorities are working diligently to identify the suspect or suspects involved. The Bath Township Detective Bureau, in collaboration with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, is gathering evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses. Police are also in contact with Airbnb and the property owner concerning the ongoing investigation.

Sinopoli noted that short-term rentals are prohibited under Bath Township zoning regulations. An Airbnb spokesperson echoed the sentiment of concern, stating, “We are heartbroken by this senseless act of gun violence.” The spokesperson further confirmed that unauthorized gatherings are strictly prohibited on the platform. Following the incident, the listing for the property was suspended, and the account of the individual who booked the stay was removed due to violations of Airbnb’s policies.

The property in question was purchased by Michael Jones for $1.2 million in 2022. Jones is currently facing federal mail and wire fraud charges in Nevada, accused of defrauding small businesses for grant-writing services he never delivered. Prior to his sentencing to six and a half years in prison, he transferred ownership of the property to his wife, Shauna Gardner.

Community Response and Safety Concerns

The local community is grappling with the implications of this incident. Akron Mayor Shammas Malik expressed deep concern for the young people involved, stating, “As we learn more about the situation, it appears to be part of a broader issue—helping ensure youth across our community are safe.” He called for collective responsibility from parents and government to address safety concerns surrounding such gatherings.

Malik emphasized the City of Akron’s commitment to collaborating with parents, youth-serving non-profits, and the community to enhance safety measures. He also acknowledged the vital work of emergency services in responding to the incident, stating, “Today, my heart is with the victims of this shooting and their families, those who witnessed this incident, and those safety forces who responded to it.”

Authorities are urging anyone who attended the party or possesses relevant information, including photos or videos, to contact Bath Township Police at 330-666-3736. As the investigation continues, the community remains hopeful for swift justice and a resolution to the violence that disrupted their neighborhood.
