Multiple Coffee Chains File for Bankruptcy Amid Price Surge
URGENT UPDATE: Multiple coffee chains across the United States have filed for bankruptcy as of late October 2023, driven by soaring coffee prices and significant economic pressures. The Labor Department reports that coffee prices have skyrocketed by 19 percent over the past year, outpacing overall inflation and placing immense strain on businesses and consumers alike.
The rising costs are attributed to a combination of adverse weather conditions impacting crop yields in major producing countries such as Vietnam and Brazil, alongside new tariffs imposed on imports that have elevated expenses for American coffee companies. As a result, significant players in the industry, including Starbucks, are restructuring operations, closing underperforming locations, and reducing staff to navigate the challenging landscape. CEO Brian Niccol has voiced concerns about the impact of tariffs and inflation on operations, noting that cash-strapped consumers are being more selective with their spending.
WHICH COMPANIES ARE IN TROUBLE? The Blend Coffee and Cocktails recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Middle District of Florida. The company, known for its unique coffee flights and diverse menu, reported assets between $0 and $50,000 and liabilities ranging from $500,001 to $1 million. It operates eight locations in Florida and aims to restructure its debts while continuing business operations.
Similarly, the parent company of Cuppa Austin Coffee filed for bankruptcy in the Western District of Texas in early October. Best Cuppa Austin, Inc. reported assets of $50,000 to $100,000 and liabilities between $500,000 and $1 million. The case summary highlights a challenging financial period for the decade-old coffee shop, exacerbated by substantial loans and merchant agreements.
In a troubling forecast, Compass Coffee, which operates numerous locations in the Mid-Atlantic region, may also be forced into bankruptcy. A lawyer representing the company has indicated ongoing disputes with a landlord regarding a roasting facility, claiming the company owes approximately $1 million in back rent. The attorney stated that if the current rent remains unchanged, Compass Coffee could be left with no option but to declare bankruptcy.
WHAT EXPERTS ARE SAYING: Mike Hoffman, Professor Emeritus at Cornell University, warned in a recent interview with CNBC that coffee prices are set to continue climbing, citing climate change as a persistent threat. “The severity of droughts, flooding, all of that will get worse. It’s not just coffee—it’s the whole food supply,” he stated.
LOOKING AHEAD: Coffee prices are projected to remain volatile through the end of 2025. In response, some lawmakers are pushing for changes to existing tariffs that could alleviate costs for consumers. On October 25, 2023, Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and Republican Senator Rand Paul introduced the “No Coffee Tax Act,” aimed at repealing tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. Paul emphasized that taxing coffee imports does not create jobs and instead raises prices for families and businesses.
As the coffee industry navigates these turbulent waters, consumers will be closely watching for potential price relief and the fate of their favorite coffee brands. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
