UPDATE: A Sunnyvale man was arrested after violently confronting pro-Palestinian vigil participants and cutting down their flags from a Highway 101 overpass. Joshua Krupia, 41, was taken into custody just before 5:30 PM on November 7, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

Witnesses reported that Krupia approached a group of individuals demonstrating for Gaza rights and engaged in a heated verbal dispute. He allegedly yelled racist slurs and profanities before escalating to violence. Police indicate that Krupia used a pocketknife to cut down flags and banners, inciting a physical altercation. During the confrontation, he struck one individual in the head with a flashlight, causing minor injuries, and punched another victim.

Officers arrived at the scene, where Krupia was already being detained by bystanders. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked into Santa Clara County Jail.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations – San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA) condemned the incident, stating, “We are outraged by this reported violent assault on community members peacefully advocating for Palestinian human rights. This was not just vandalism — it was a hate-motivated attack that left people injured while exercising their right to free expression.”

Authorities are currently investigating the incident and gathering statements from witnesses. The community remains on alert, as tensions grow surrounding protests and demonstrations related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

As the situation develops, it is essential for local residents to stay informed and vigilant. Updates will follow as more details emerge about the case against Krupia and the impact on community demonstrations in the area.
