Eagles Star Saquon Barkley Surprises 50 Kids with Beds
UPDATE: In a heartwarming event on October 17, 2023, Eagles star Saquon Barkley surprised 50 underserved children in Philadelphia with brand-new beds, sparking joy and excitement at the Phield House in the Spring Garden neighborhood. This initiative is part of the ongoing Hope to Dream program, aiming to provide children with the essential comfort of a safe sleeping environment.
The atmosphere was filled with laughter and smiles as children unwrapped their new mattresses and bedding essentials. Eleven-year-old Ashyla from North Philadelphia expressed her gratitude, saying, “It feels great. I need something to sleep on and it’s cozy.” Such sentiments echoed throughout the event, showcasing the immediate impact of this generous gesture.
Fresh off a Monday night victory, Barkley emphasized the significance of supporting the community. “Win or lose, when you come to stuff like this, it puts things into perspective that there is so much more stuff bigger than football,” he remarked, highlighting his commitment to making a difference in the lives of youth through better sleep and improved academic performance.
Organized by Ashley Furniture, the Salvation Army, and the Michael Ann & Saquon Barkley Hope Foundation, the event is a well-timed gift for families ahead of the holiday season. Lt. Col. Edgar George of The Salvation Army noted, “It’s early Christmas for these kids, but not only is it a brand-new bed for these youngsters, it’s a peace of mind for mom and dad.”
Barkley’s initiative aims to provide children with the dignity of a proper bed. Tara Kelly, vice president of marketing and advertising at Ashley, stated, “Research shows it will improve their academic performance, but more than that for me personally, it’s a matter of dignity. They shouldn’t have to sleep on a floor or sofa.”
The event not only benefits the children but also relieves parents’ burdens. Sherina Booker, a grateful mother from North Philadelphia, shared, “I’m going to be moving soon, and this just came out of nowhere, and I’m just ever grateful to have a bed. That’s one less thing I have to get.”
Community members expressed their appreciation for such impactful initiatives. Helena Williams, another local parent, said, “Blessed that people want to give back. Just because you make the money, doesn’t mean you have to give anything up.”
Since its inception in 2010, the Hope to Dream program has donated nearly 200,000 beds to children in need across the nation, underscoring a commitment to enhancing the lives of underserved families.
As this event wraps up, the call to action is clear: the need for continued support and community involvement is paramount. This initiative not only transforms lives but also sets a precedent for charitable efforts in urban areas, encouraging others to contribute to the well-being of children in their communities.
