Winterhawks Suffer Heartbreaking Loss as Raiders Rally Late
UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the Portland Winterhawks fell to the Prince Albert Raiders after leading 2-0 with just under 20 minutes left in the game. The Raiders surged back, scoring four goals in the third period, including the game-winner by Brayden Dube with only 1:55 remaining.
This loss marks the Winterhawks’ fourth consecutive defeat and comes amidst mounting frustration following a recent controversial non-offside call that led to a tying goal. The Winterhawks seemed poised for an upset against the East Division leaders until the final moments shifted dramatically against them.
Starting strong, the Winterhawks shocked fans by outplaying the Raiders in the opening period, leading 1-0 thanks to a shorthanded goal. However, their second period was their strongest of the season, dominating with an 11-4 shot advantage and extending their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Sam Spehar.
But the third period told a different story. Despite Portland having the second-best goal difference in the league during this period, they faltered, conceding four goals. The turning point came when Dube, who was offside by at least a foot, scored the equalizer, a call that sparked controversy as the Western Hockey League does not allow video reviews for offside plays.
“What a goal. Tie game,” tweeted the Raiders, highlighting the dramatic shift in momentum.
With this loss, the Winterhawks’ record dips below .500 for the first time in nearly a month. Despite their effort, they struggled on three power plays, failing to capitalize when it mattered most. The Raiders’ defense proved impenetrable, successfully killing all five of Portland’s power plays, including critical moments in the final period.
Looking ahead, the Winterhawks will face the Wenatchee Wild this Friday at 7:00 PM PST, seeking to recover from this tough loss. Meanwhile, the Raiders continue their road trip, now sitting seven points clear at the top of their division with three games in hand.
This game serves as a stark reminder of the thin margins in hockey, where one controversial call can shift the fate of a match. As the Winterhawks regroup, fans are left wondering how they can turn their luck around.
The next matchup between these teams is not scheduled until next season, leaving Portland with plenty of time to reflect and strategize for a stronger showing moving forward.
