Community Unites for $35,000 at Big Island Charity Pickleball Tournament

A vibrant display of sportsmanship and community spirit unfolded in Waimea, Hawaii, as the sixth annual Big Island Open Charity Pickleball Tournament took place at the Rutgers Tennis Center. The two-day event, hosted by Hawaii Preparatory Academy, successfully brought together pickleball enthusiasts from across the island, raising an impressive $35,000 to support families in need through the Big Island Giving Tree.

The tournament, held on October 14-15, 2023, featured 64 players competing in various divisions. Participants engaged in 15 round-robin matches per group, culminating in medal rounds. This year’s event was organized by a new leadership team comprising Judith Wright, Kirsten Kempe, Robert Carlin, and Lauren Allen, who successfully continued the vision established by founders Gary and Barbara Zipkin.

Impact of the Tournament on Local Families

The funds raised during the tournament will significantly impact the community, providing meals, financial support, and essential resources to low-income families during the holiday season. Notably, an anonymous donor matched the total funds raised dollar-for-dollar, effectively doubling the contribution to the Big Island Giving Tree. This local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has been dedicated to supporting the island’s vulnerable populations for over 16 years, offering critical assistance to working families and homeless individuals.

“Having access to HPA’s Rutgers Tennis Center has been crucial to the tournament’s success,” the organizers stated. The indoor facility allowed the event to proceed without disruptions from inclement weather, ensuring a comfortable experience for all participants. The focus remained on fostering community, sportsmanship, and philanthropy.
