The University of Colorado announced on Thursday that Rick George will step down from his position as athletic director at the end of the year. In a transition to a new role, George will serve as a special adviser to the chancellor. His tenure as athletic director began in 2013, making him the sixth individual to hold the position at the university.

George previously worked with the Texas Rangers as their chief operating officer before joining Colorado. During his time at the university, he oversaw the hiring and performance of several head football coaches, including Mike MacIntyre, Mel Tucker, and Karl Dorrell, before bringing in Deion Sanders from Jackson State.

Under George’s leadership, the Colorado Buffaloes football team experienced a significant turnaround, culminating in a 9-4 season in 2024. Sanders’ arrival brought heightened attention and excitement to the program, particularly with the recruitment of his sons and standout player Travis Hunter. In contrast, the Buffaloes have struggled in the current season, holding a 3-7 record, following the absence of Hunter and former quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

George’s decision to step down marks a pivotal moment for the university’s athletic department. His leadership brought a new vision, and he played a critical role in the recruitment of Sanders, who received a contract extension after the successful 2024 season. Sanders currently holds a five-year deal worth $54 million that is set to last until 2029.

Despite the challenges faced this season, George and Sanders maintained a positive working relationship, with Sanders occasionally humorously expressing his frustrations regarding scheduling. George’s departure may signal a new chapter for Colorado athletics as the school looks to continue building on its recent momentum in football and other sports.

As Rick George transitions from his role, the future of the athletic department rests in the hands of those who will follow in his footsteps, with the hope of further elevating Colorado’s profile in collegiate athletics.
