UPDATE: In a shocking turn of events, both the Niwot and Mead volleyball teams were eliminated in the first round of the state tournament at the Denver Coliseum on Thursday. These two teams from the BoCoPreps coverage area were aiming for a deep run, but their aspirations were cut short as they faced tough competition.

Niwot, seeded No. 12 in Class 5A, faced off against No. 5 Rampart, but could not secure a win, falling 3-1. After losing the first two sets 25-15 and 25-19, the Cougars fought back to take the third set 25-21, only to see their hopes dashed in the fourth set with a final score of 25-14. This loss leaves Niwot with a record of 19-7 as they prepare to challenge either No. 3 Rock Canyon or No. 6 Ralston Valley in the first consolation round.

Meanwhile, No. 9 Mead struggled in the 4A competition, facing No. 8 Battle Mountain. The Mavericks also lost the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-22, before claiming a narrow victory in the third set 25-23. However, they could not maintain the momentum, succumbing in the fourth set with a score of 25-22. With a current record of 17-9, Mead will now face the winner of No. 2 Windsor and No. 7 Berthoud in their first consolation match.

The fierce competition at the state tournament has left fans and players alike feeling the intensity of the moment. Both teams had shown promise earlier in the season, with Niwot pulling off an impressive upset as the No. 17 seed against Pueblo West, and Mead showcasing the skills of senior leaders Rylee Klatt and Elena Gomez during their regional matches.

As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on the Cougars and Mavericks as they look to regroup and make a statement in the consolation rounds. Keep an eye on these teams as they strive to turn their fortunes around and demonstrate their resilience in the coming days.
