Community Mourns the Loss of Philanthropist Beth Schwebel
Elizabeth (Beth) Schwebel, a beloved community member and philanthropist, passed away on November 15, 2025, at the age of 88. Born Betsy Anne Ironside on July 4, 1937, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Elsworth and Marie Ironside. From a young age, Beth displayed a spirit of independence and a commitment to following her heart, values that guided her throughout her life.
After exploring Europe in her youth, Beth moved to Los Angeles, where she worked in a dental office. It was there that she met her future husband, Sheldon Schwebel. The couple eventually relocated to San Francisco and settled in Corte Madera, California, where they married in 1962. Beth often expressed that when she first saw Mt. Tamalpais, she knew they had found their true home.
Commitment to Family and Community
Beth devoted herself to raising her two sons, Keith and Brent Schwebel, viewing this role as the most meaningful aspect of her life. She left her position at Shel’s dental practice, which she found fulfilling as it allowed her to assist others, to focus on her family. Her commitment to service extended beyond her home; she taught dental health in local schools through the Dental Auxiliary College and played a key role in expanding a meal delivery program for seniors, growing it from a handful of meals to over 250 meals a day.
Beth was an active member of the Community Congregational Church of Tiburon, where she forged lasting friendships through her warmth, humor, and engagement. Spiritually, she considered herself a “seeker,” moving beyond the Catholic church of her childhood to embrace reform congregations that aligned with her values of compassion and inclusion.
A Legacy of Love and Acceptance
An advocate for environmental stewardship, Beth passionately worked to protect the earth and combat climate change. She believed in equality for all individuals, regardless of religion, race, or gender. This conviction was exemplified when her granddaughter came out as gay; Beth embraced her fully and without hesitation, showcasing her unconditional love and support.
Known for her playful spirit, Beth had an incredible ability to brighten the lives of those around her. Her special hugs, engaging games of cribbage, and well-timed jokes brought joy to many. She passed away peacefully, leaving a legacy filled with kindness, strength, and joy.
Beth is survived by her husband, Sheldon; her sons, Keith and Brent; and her grandchildren, Charlotte, Georgia, Jack, and Cole. The impact of her life will be felt by her family and the numerous friends she touched throughout her journey.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, November 15, at 16:00 at the Community Congregational Church of Tiburon, providing an opportunity for family and friends to honor her memory and the joy she brought into their lives.
