14 Charged in Urgent NJ Sports Betting Ring Linked to Crime Family
UPDATE: Authorities have charged 14 individuals in a major illegal sports betting ring linked to organized crime in North Jersey, according to a shocking announcement made by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin today. The alleged ringleader, Joseph “Little Joe” Perna, 55, is reportedly a soldier in the infamous Lucchese crime family and is at the center of a scheme that has facilitated approximately $2 million in illegal gambling transactions from 2022 to 2024.
This urgent crackdown exposes a network that not only includes seasoned criminals but also allegedly involves student-athletes. Investigators assert that the betting ring solicited people to place illegal sports bets, generating proceeds to benefit its members. The operation’s base was found in the Essex and Bergen counties, with a complex web of bookmakers implicated.
Col. Patrick J. Callahan, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, emphasized the importance of this operation’s takedown, stating,
“The takedown of this organized illegal sports gambling ring underscores our unwavering commitment to dismantling criminal networks that profit from corruption and greed.”
Among the defendants are Perna’s son, Joseph R. Perna, 25, who allegedly managed daily sportsbook operations, and his other relatives, including Anthony Perna, 23, and Frank Zito, 23. The broad reach of the ring has resulted in charges against individuals from various locations, including William Medeiros, 22, of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and Devon Shuster, 28, of Gainesville, Florida.
Multiple defendants face serious charges, including racketeering, conspiracy, gambling offenses, and money laundering. In a notable twist, both Perna’s wife, Kim Zito, 53, and ex-wife, Rosanna Magno, 52, face additional charges not directly related to the racketeering allegations.
As this story develops, the focus remains on the implications for sports integrity and the involvement of young athletes in illegal activities. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and further arrests may follow as the investigation unfolds.
Stay tuned for updates on this significant legal action that could reshape the landscape of sports betting in New Jersey.
