New York Health Commissioner Urges Flu Vaccination Now
URGENT UPDATE: New York State’s health commissioner, Jim McDonald, M.D., has issued a critical advisory for residents as flu season approaches. With October 2023 ushering in typical respiratory illnesses, officials emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated to mitigate health risks.
In an interview with Spectrum News 1, McDonald explained the expected trajectory of respiratory viruses this year. “The CDC is predicting this year to be a moderate flu season,” he stated, highlighting the unpredictability of flu patterns. “If you’ve seen one flu season, you’ve seen only one flu season,” he cautioned.
As communities prepare for increased illness, McDonald urges getting the flu vaccine and practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing. “Encourage children to play, but if they’re sick, it’s vital to postpone social interactions,” he advised.
McDonald also emphasized the dual importance of the COVID vaccine and a new RSV vaccine, which he predicts could significantly reduce hospital admissions for infants. “RSV is one of the leading causes of infant hospitalizations,” he noted, stressing the vaccine’s potential as a game-changing public health tool.
In a stark warning about misinformation, McDonald cautioned against relying on unqualified sources for health decisions. “Too many of us are listening to strangers and making important health decisions based on that,” he asserted. “Your doctor knows best.” He also criticized unhealthy eating habits, stating, “I worry about junk food for the brain.”
As flu season begins, McDonald reminded residents to be aware of symptoms common to COVID, flu, and RSV. “They often start with a cough, fever, and runny nose. Vulnerable populations, particularly the very young and the elderly, may experience severe respiratory issues,” he explained.
McDonald urged individuals to trust their bodies—if symptoms arise, seek testing and medical advice. “If your body is speaking, we should always listen,” he concluded. He advises staying hydrated, consuming nutritious foods, and using medications like Tylenol for fever relief. In cases of severe symptoms, he emphasized the importance of contacting your doctor or heading to the hospital.
As flu season looms, the time to act is NOW. Make your health a priority by getting vaccinated and staying informed.
