A veteran from Colorado attributes his survival to his service dog, a yellow Labrador named Tommy, who alerted him to a serious medical emergency in February 2023. Hank Ford, a former member of both the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, experienced an irregular heartbeat that could have resulted in a stroke had Tommy not intervened.

Ford, who faces challenges related to PTSD, described the profound impact Tommy has had on his life. “It’s like night and day,” he said, noting the significant changes in his demeanor and confidence since bringing the service dog into his life. Friends and family have remarked on the positive transformation, with many surprised by the difference they see in him.

On the morning of the incident, Tommy deviated from his usual routine of waking Ford at 07:00 and instead began to vigorously nudge him in the chest. “He wasn’t coming up to my face. He was literally hitting me in the chest,” Ford recalled. Recognizing that something was amiss, he sought medical attention. Upon evaluation at the hospital, doctors confirmed he was experiencing a rapid, irregular heartbeat. Ford was informed that had Tommy not alerted him, he might not have woken up and could have faced a life-threatening stroke.

In discussing the stigma surrounding service dogs, Ford pointed out that many veterans hesitate to acquire one due to concerns about how they might be perceived in public. “A lot of veterans, they won’t get a dog because they think people look at you different when you’re walking through a store,” he explained. “But a dog makes a huge difference.” His sentiments reflect a broader issue faced by many veterans who struggle with mental health challenges and the role service dogs can play in their recovery.

Ford articulated the profound bond he shares with Tommy, stating, “Everybody always talks about, you know, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. It was a dark spot. He turned the lights on.” This statement underscores the essential role that service animals can play in the lives of those dealing with trauma and mental health issues.

The story of Hank Ford and Tommy highlights the critical importance of service dogs in providing support and improving the quality of life for veterans. As Ford continues to advocate for the benefits of service animals, he hopes to encourage others to consider how a canine companion might help them navigate their own challenges.
